The Dutch NKE Shorthanded Team has invited me to join them in preparation for the 2011 Transat 6.50.

Together with NKE Benelux, quality marine electronics supplier, the Shorthanded Foundation provides monthly training sessions, workshops and seminars on topics such as sleep, food, navigation or project management.

All members of the NKE Shorthanded Team will be trained by Mini Transat veterans Lucas Schröder, Koen van Esch and Jelmer Bouw.

Reasons for joining the Shorthanded Team

Shorthanded sailing is a very difficult sport to be good at. It is not just sailing that one has to know about in order to be successful, but also project management, PR or carbon fibres. But at the same time is also an incredibly open sport as everyone has the same problems. If one asks nicely, you are bound to find someone who can help.

I see the Shorthanded Team as a chance to learn from others while offering what I know to other members of the team. During the transat 6.50 I will sail my boat single-handed, but up to then it is definitely not a journey to complete alone.

Solo Challenge Award

The Shorthanded Foundation also hands out the yearly Solo Challenge Award. This award goes to the best Dutch presentation in shorthanded sailing.

50, 100, 1000 Miles + Coldhanded Cup

For sailors that are not immediately aiming aiming their bows at the Atlantic Ocean, the Shorthanded Foundation organsises various single and double-handed races: the 50, 100 and 1000 miles. Additionally there is the shorthanded and crewed Coldhanded Winterseries.
